Online Summer School 2021:
Genetic Epidemiology of Kidney Function and Chronic Kidney Disease
12-16 July 2021 ONLINE EDITION

What is the Summer School about?

The Summer School is an international programme to share recent advances in the genetic epidemiology of kidney function and chronic kidney disease. The school is aimed at PhD students and Postdocs in biomedical disciplines who want to learn about up-to-date methods for identifying genetic determinants of kidney function and learn about the latest results.

The underlying educational theme will be the genetic epidemiology of complex diseases, among which CKD plays a particular role: widespread and largely silent in ~10% of the world’s adult population, CKD is one of the diseases that has seen the fastest increase in related mortality over the last decade. Unfortunately, treatment options for its prevention or to slow its progression are still scarce. For this reason, the identification of associated genes is an important step for identifying possible avenues for the development of novel therapies.

The school is being developed as part of the TrainCKDis network (Multidisciplinary Training in Chronic Kidney Disease: from genetic modifiers to drug discovery; www.trainckdis.eu): a European innovative, multidisciplinary, and intersectoral training programme to prepare the next generation of top-level scientists to develop creative solutions for transforming CKD research. The TrainCKDis is funded under the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action Innovative Training Network (H2020 MSCA-ITN-2019).

In addition to a wide range of lectures provided by experts in the field, the training will be carried out in an interactive manner, leaving plenty of room for interaction between scholars to encourage the development of mutual collaborations.

Who can participate?

The Summer School is designed for those who wish to upgrade their knowledge of genetic epidemiology of complex diseases, with special attention to kidney function and CKD:

  • PhD students in biomedical disciplines
  • Postdoctoral researchers
  • Faculties and researchers from academic institutions
  • Researchers from non-academic institutions, including private companies

What to expect?

A 5-day programme, embedded in an exciting international learning environment including:

  • lectures by distinguished academics;
  • discussions and case studies with experts;
  • interactive workshops and activities;
  • the possibility to share your research.

The Summer School will be held in English.

How to submit?

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the Organizing Committee has decided to offer the Summer School only in online format, so to guarantee to our participants to attend and present while staying safe.

Please consider the admission to the Summer School will be based on evaluation of the motivation letter (1 page) and CV (1 page).

We are planning a poster session to allow participants to present their research. If interested, please submit also your abstract.

The students of the consortium TrainCKDs can submit an eventual abstract, no CV or motivation letter are requiered for them.

Important dates:

1st March 2021 Application (CV + motivation letter) and eventual Poster submission opens
15th June 2021 Application & eventual Poster submission deadline
15th June 2021 Notification to the participants about the outcome of application
15th June 2021 Registration opens
5th July 2021 Registration closes & fee payment deadline

Registration fees:

  • Free participation to the PhD students of the consortium TrainCKDs.
  • Free participation to 5 students from these countries. The students will be selected on the base of the applications.
  • 100€ – MSc, PhD, Postdoc students, Academic researchers, Non-academic researchers (for profit companies).

If your participation is NOT FREE of charge, please firstly register below to get an invoice and after register to get a Zoom link to access the Summer School.

If you are going to present a poster, please consider these instructions:

  • 5 slides:
  • Title slide, including title, author(s), affiliation
  • Background – given participants’ background is very diverse, this slide is mandatory
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusions
  • Slides 3-5 can be combined together to allow a better presentation of interesting results or to better describe methodological challenges
  • Presentations will be live and should last 8 minutes + 2 minutes for questions
